When you start to write posts, you’ll want to split them up into different sections or categories.

By way of example, on my own photography blog, I have the following categories:

  1. Blogging Stuff
  2. General Photography Stuff
  3. Photo Projects
  4. Photo Meets
  5. Photo Shoots
  6. Tutorials

As my posts increase, so they all slot into the different categories; it’s easier if you want to find all the tutorials, for instance, you just click on the Tutorial Category & all the tutorials are displayed.

You set up your categories via your Admin panel

  1. Once in your Admin Panel, select the second link in from the top left “Manage“, then select “Categories“.
  2. You should see just the default category “Uncategorised“. You should add a new category & can do so either by pressing the (add new) link near the top or the ‘Add Category‘ section near the bottom. You can add a decription of your new category, but it’s not necessary.
  3. Once you have added all your categories, they will be displayed in a list, each has a check box next to it - except the ‘Uncategorised‘. This is because ‘Uncategorised‘ is the default category & you can’t delete the default category. Default simply means, when you write a new post, if you forget to asign it to a category, it will automatically be added to the default category.
  4. If you wish your posts to be added to a different category by default, you’ll need to assign your new category as default. To do this you need to go to ‘Settings‘ top right of your Admin Panel, then select ‘Writing‘. Select your default Post Category from the drop-down list.
  5. You can now go back the the Categories Admin section & delete the ‘Uncategorised’ (if you don’t want it)
